PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the spalling resistance of a work roll in cold rolling (descaling rolling) which eliminates mechanically hot-rolled scales of a hot-rolled steel strip, improve the durability and stability in the roll, and ensure the stable operation of descaling rolling.;SOLUTION: The descaling method includes the steps of subjecting cold rolling to the hot-rolled steel strip prior to the pickling process, and crashing and exfoliating hot-rolled scales deposited on the strip surface under the press-down force of the roll, wherein the cold rolling is performed using the work roll having the surface part of the roll barrel part of a fracture toughness KIC of 784 N/mm3/2 or more. The surface part of the work roll is made of, e.g. WC-Co based cemented carbide (preferably the amount of WC: 75-80 vol%). The work roll has a laminate structure comprising a roll shaft core member 12 and the skin layer part 11, and may have a composite roll structure with the application of the alloy for the skin layer part 11.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
