Alpha substd. 3-thienyl:acetamide derivs. - useful as hypnotic, anticonvulsant and tranquillising agents

Thiophene derivs. of formula (I) in racemic or optically active form are new. In (I), A is -CHR1-, -C(C2H5)(-CH2-CH=CH2)-, -CR2R3-, or gp. of formulae (II) or (III); R1 is 2-5C opt. branched alkyl, benzyl, propargyl, or 5-7C cycloalkyl; R2 and R3 are ethyl, propyl, allyl or propargyl; R4 is H or CH3; R5 is CH2 or O. (I) are made from the corresp. acid by chlorination then reaction with NH3. (I) have neuropsychotropic, esp. hypnotic, anticonvulsant and antianxiety-type tranquillising activity so are useful in human or veterinary medicine for treating insomnia, epilepsy or anxiety.
