Process for producing o-cresol and 2,6-xylenol in an alumina fluidised bed. A gaseous stream containing phenol and methanol is continuously fed to a reaction zone containing a fluidised bed of alumina particles of a size from 20 to 100 microns and of the eta-, gamma- or chi-crystallographic form at a temperature from 200 DEG to 400 DEG C; the alumina particles are continuously discharged from the reaction zone and continuously fed to a regeneration zone to which a stream of oxygen or oxygen-containing gas is fed, alway continuously, at 300 DEG to 700 DEG C, with the alumina particles in the form of a fluidised bed. The alumina particles are continuously recycled from the regeneration zones to the reaction zone. The 2,6-xylenol is used for producing polymers, plasticisers, antioxidants and chemical products for agriculture.
