An Improved proces for the preparation of anisole, O-cresol and 2,6-xylenol comprising reacting phenol and me-thanol In the presence of metal oxide catalyst like alumina, magnesia or calcium oxide wherein the Improvement comprises in that phenol and methanol are used in ratios of 1:1 to i:8 at a temperature range of 200 to 300C with alumina, which is capable of being regenerated by heating upto 550 C as catalyst, at a pressure In the range of 50-100 bars in the presence of an inert gas.
