Reduction of by-product 2- chloroethanol production in preparation of ethylene dichloride

Improvements in the reaction of ethylene and chlorine in the vapor phase to form ethylene dichloride in the presence of an effective amount of a catalyst and in the presence of water, comprise conducting the reaction in the presence of an amount of added HCl effective to reduce the amount of by-product 2-chloroethanol. The process is especially applicable to reducing unreacted ethylene in the vent gas stream resulting from ethylene dichloride production in the synthesis of vinyl chloride from ethylene.
