The invention is novel methods for the control of shipping fever in cattle, comprising administering parenterally to the animals a pharmaceutically effective amount of the antibiotic BM123&ggr;, pharmaceutically acceptable salts, and alkyl derivatives thereof. This invention further relates to the antibiotic BM123&ggr;, pharmaceutically acceptable salts, and alkyl derivatives thereof, which have beneficial effect of controlling shipping fever in cattle.
