PURPOSE:To produce a sintered body under a relatively low press. in a short time by sintering titanium carbide or tungsten carbide powder having a microstrain obtd. by applying mechanically striking energy. CONSTITUTION:Titanium carbide or tungsten carbide powder raw material 1 with an average diameter of about 5mu is covered with Ni foil and formed into a disk shape. Disk-shaped raw material 1 is mounted on central protrusion 4 of lower punch 3 fixed into cylinder 2, and upper punch 5 is set on material 1. Striking energy of 10 tons.meter or more is applied to material 1 through punch 5 to produce a microstrain inducing no change in crystal external form and having crystal disorder or lattice disorder in the interior alone. Material 1 having the microstrain is then sintered under a static press. below 20,000atm at above 1500 deg.C for about 5min to produce a sintered body of titanium carbide or tungsten carbide.
