New organic polymers have one or more active gps. linked by chemical bonds to the chains of the polymer. Each of these bonds meets a C atom adjacent to another C atom to which carries an OH, alkoxy, halogen, thiol or sulphide substit. or also a second active gp. (which may be the same as or similar to, the first gp) i.e. these substits. are in the alpha-position, w.r.t. each other and =1 is esp. active gp. Pref. the polymer also carries a pair of substits. in the alpha-position w.r.t. one another, selected from OH, halogen and/or thiol gps. only without active gps. The active gps. may be chromophoric surfactant, ion-exchange active, cosmetic, rheological, chelate-forming etc., and the polymers may be used for the prepn. of pigments, varnishes, lacquers, coating compsns. ion-exchangers, carriers for affinity-chromatography and partic. of cosmetic prods., comprising sun-protecting creams or gel-forming agents, for skin or hair and/or pigments.
