1338849 Polymers containing alkanes and alkane derivatives NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO 24 Jan 1972 [1 Feb 1971] 3240/72 Heading C3P [Also in Division G2] Polymeric materials useful for forming viewing screens in visual display devices are obtained by polymerizing a liquid monomer in admixture with an alkane having at least 9 carbon atoms or a 1- or 2-amino, carboxyl or hydroxyl derivative thereof. The alkane (or derivative) generally forms 0À2-20% by weight of the mixture. Monomers mentioned are styrene and alkyl methacrylates, e.g. methyl, ethyl and butyl methacrylates. Examples of suitable alkanes and derivatives are docosane, docosoic acid, docosyl alcohol, docosyl amine, decane, decylic acid, decyl alcohol, decylamine and other C 20 -C 36 alkanes. In illustrated preparations, polymerization is effected thermally without an initiator. The materials are semitransparent at temperatures below the melting point of the alkane (or derivative) and transparent at temperatures above said melting point.
