APEX SEAL FOR ROTARY PISTON INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

PURPOSE:To reduce the wear of an apex seal for a rotary internal combustion engine by reducing the sliding friction of the apex seal against the rotor housing to be generated as the rotor speed is accelerated. CONSTITUTION:Slots for inserting balance weights 2, 2' are formed at the apex portion of a rotor 1, and the balance weights 2, 2' are provided at the ends of torque arms 4, 4', respectively. The torque arms 4, 4' are supported at the fulcra 5, 5' in the rotor 1, and a bar 9 is pivoltally secured at the lower end thereof to the other ends of the torque arms 4, 4'. Thus, an apex seal 8 is supported at the upper end of the bar 9. This apex seal 8 is always elastically urged upwardly by a spring 6. When the rotor exceeds its predetermined speed, the balance weights 2, 2' are moved upwardly by centrifugal force to retract the apex seal 8 downwardly against the spring 6.
