1427098 Apex seals NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 5 March 1974 [8 March 1973] 9776/74 Heading F1F An apex seal comprises at least two abutting parts having inclined end-faces along which, the two parts are in sliding engagement and a recess on a side face of the seal extending along the interface between the two parts from the bottom of the seal so as to allow pressure to be exerted on the underside of the apex seal when it is located in a rotor of a rotary piston I.C. engine of the epitrochoidal type. The recess is located on that face of the apex seal which, in use, is the leading one. As described the apex seal comprises three parts 18a, b c with complementary sloping end surfaces with two recesses on its leading surface which are formed by chamfering a sloping edge of either the ends 18b and c or the two ends of intermediate part 18a. Alternatively, each of all the respective sloping edges of the three parts 18a, b, c maybe chamfered and so co-operate to define the two recesses in the leading face of the seal. In an alternative embodiment triangular shaped recesses are formed in the end parts 18b and c.
