The device consists of a drive component (10) supporting radially movable jaws (11) returned inwards by a spring. These jaws, actuated by associated flyweights (19) may bear on the cylindrical parts of two inner (4) or outer (5) pulleys, depending on the magnitude of the centrifugal acceleration to which the flyweights are subjected, thus bringing about, for a given speed, the disengagement of one pulley and the engagement of the other. However, the flyweights comprise a finger (26) interacting with a locking component (21) which prevents the flyweights from moving radially outwards when they revolve in a given direction. Thus, when this device is associated with a two-speed electric motor, it makes it possible to obtain three different speeds, the middle speed and the high speed being obtained in different rotational directions.
