A process for the conversion of poly (ethylene terephthalate) waste into methyl hydroxy-ethyl terephthalate (MHET) in substantial yield, which comprises, cracking the polyethylene terephthalate waste with methanol and ethylene glycol and a catalyst selected from the group consisting of carbonate and acetates of zinc and calcium at a required temperature of from 150-250 C° and pressure of from 2-10 kg/cmsup2/sup for a period around four hours and pouring the cracked material in water or methanol.
