The applicator for an ear tag has jaw carriers which are pivotally interconnected to first spring biassing the jaws apart. Further springs hold the male and female portions of the ear tag on the jaws. At leasat one of the handles releasably engages its jaw carrier so that the jaw carrier is released from the handle as the handles are brought together to permit automatic opening of the jaws by the first spring.
