A laser (1) emits a beam (2) which passes through a translucent mirror (3) splitting the beam into a horizontal plane (4) which excites the reference detector (21) and a downward beam (5) which passes into the oil slick (6). Back reflection (23, 7) is received at a distance counter (22) and at a filter system respectively (14-15-16), through a set of semi-transparent mirrors (8, 11) which divert part of the beam (10) for photometric analysis. The oil thickness is derived from a formula of the type d=(A(B)I, where d is the thickness in mu m, I is the fluorescence efficiency in nm-1, sr-1 following IR irradiation and (A/B) is the result of an ultraviolet irradiation spectral analysis for various wave lengths.
