A double-skinned convertible tanker has a double side wall and a double bottom, and upper side tanks located between the deck underside and an inclined upper wall of the cargo tank space. These top side tanks have a lower surface which is inclined at an angle of at least 30 DEG with respect to the horizontal and which either merges with the deck plating or merges with a respective one of two underdeck longitudinal girders. Segregated ballast space is provided within the double side wall, the double bottom, and the top side tanks, and preferably also between the plates of double-plated bulkheads arranged along the vessel.
