Trivalent chromium-trans-acid complexes - esp with fumaric acid for improving adhesion of polymers to substrates

A complex contains (1) as cation, is not 1 water-sol. coordination complex of (a) Cr(III) derived from a water-sol. salt of Cr and a non-coordinated anion, this salt being able to provide Cr(H2O)63+ ions in water, with (b) a 4-10C trans-acid of formula where R1 and R2 are H, alkyl, CH2COOH or phenyl gps., and (2) a non-coordinated mono-valent anion; the total ratio of Cr(III) and acid in the complex cation, and the non-coordinated anion is 2 : 1 : 4. Aq. solns. of such complexes are used on metal, metal oxide or glass (esp) substrates to improve adhesion, e.g. of polymers such as polyethylene, e.g. to increase the adhesion between a polymer and glass reinforcing fibres.
