The medium consists of a matrix or network of peat moss contg. a salt hydrate (I) with an incongruent m.pt. and storing heat via the latent heat of a phase change, plus a nucleant (II). Salt (I) is pref. Na2SO4,1OH2O; whereas nucleant (II) is pref. Na2B407, 1OH2O forming 3 wt.% of the medium, which pref. contains min. 7% of macerated sphagnum peat moss (based on dry wt.). The peat moss pref. contains 10-30 wt.% water, and is mixed with salts (I,II); the mixt. is heated to above the phase change of salt (I) to form a melt, and then cooled to obtain the medium. Max. efficiency is maintained during the repeated cyclic use of salt (I), so the medium has a heat capacity of ca. 52.8 kcal/kg (95 Btu/lb).
