A system for the thermal heat treatment of workpieces (for the vulcanisation of rubber parts) by irradiation with microwaves uses a tunnel, lined with moisture absorbent fibre cement, for the passage of the workpieces. The applicator consists of a sequence of resonator cavities with microwave generators in which a pressure in excess of that in the tunnel is maintained. The excess pressure is also used to cool the microwave generators. Such a plant ensures a homogenous heating of the articles. Dust and fumes, developed in the tunnel, cannot enter the magnetrons and damage them by parasitic loads.
