ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURECrystal Violet Lactone (CVL) is produced in highyield and highly pure form by a process comprising condensingMichlers hydrol with 3-dimethylaminobenzoic acid to formleuco CVL, extracting the reaction mixture containing theleuco CVL with an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, such as tolu-ene, or a mixture of such a solvent and a water-immisciblealkane, such as heptane, to remove impurities therefrom andtreating the extracted reaction mixture with an inorganic oxi-dizing agent to convert the leuco CVL to CVL.
