The anthracene content of an aromatic fraction containing anthracene, phenanthracene and homologues thereof (e.g. methylanthracene and methylphenanthracene) is increased by subjecting the fraction to hydrodealkylation (with accompanying isomerization) at 700-850‹ C. for 1-10 sees. in the presence of a 10-20 molar excess of hydrogen. Crude anthracene can be recovered by distillation.
