The safety winder is intended for a seat belt reel which is actuated by inertial forces. It has a separate spiral spring normally held in a tensioned setting by a safety brake, and released to wind in the belt on imapct, or sudden speed, change. The release is operated by an inertial mass. The spring is mounted alongside the normal spring and provides a compact safety wind. It replaces conventional, bulky hydraulic or other servo-winders. The release catch is tripped by the displacement of an inertial mass and provides maximum belt protection in a collision.
