The optical image reconstruction system is designed to produce a series of abberation-free signle-dimensional holograms related to the receive-time of high-resolution sonar of radar maps. A plane wave from a laser is used so that the azimuth coordinate is focussed to infinity. The distance coordinate, focussed in the plane of the hologram is overlaid in the azimuth plane via a cylindrical lens so that the sonar or radar map is at the focal point of the spherical lens. In order to obtain image enlargement which is independent of distance, the hologram enlargement, when the single-dimension hologram is recorded, is made inversely proportional to the object distance. The phase distribution due to the phase plate during reconstruction of the hologram is made proportional to the object distance.
