Fig. 5 shows two overlapping rope lengths, each length being within a. ductile tubular insert 3, 5. The surrounding ferrule 1 has been compressed to cause the inserts 3, 5 to grip the rope lengths. In Fig. 5 the central core of each rope was first removed and replaced by a core 9 of ductile metal so that when the ferrule 1 is compressed the ductile core 9 undergoes plastic flow between the strands 10 of its rope. A single ductile insert (11) of Figure 8 cross-section, Fig. 6 (not shown) may be used to define two bores, one for each rope length. In Fig. 5 the lengths of rope are side by side within the ferrule; alternatively, one of the ropes can be unlaid so as to encompass the insert around the other rope. The ferrule 1 may be of metal and be less ductile than the inserts 3, 5 or (11), but more ductile than the component wires of the rope. The component wires of the ropes may be of ultra-high tensile steel, alloy steel, non- ferrous alloys, and both natural and synthetic fibres. The ferrule may be of malleable cast iron, mild steel, or plastics material.
