The characteristic has 2m+1 linear sections with 2n amplitude steps. The converter is inteded for a coder operating with the interaction method. It has three decoders, the first of which converts n bits of the digital signal in a resistor network into an analogue control signal for the second decoder. The third decoder determines from the remaining bit the polarity of the second decoder output. The first two decoders have a common resistor network, to which a constant current can be applied in accordance with the digital signal "1" bits. Decoder output is connected to one of the 2m-1 junction points between a leakage resistor and at least one shunt resistor. A constant current can in addition be applied to the junction point between a leakage resistor and two shunt resistors.
