Tar mist left in coke oven gas after cooling and condensn. is removed in a venturi scrubber by sprayed ammonia liquor and a separator. The spray contains 4.2g/l ammonia has a temp. of 35 degrees C. and is sprayed at a press of 0.8 kg/cm2 from nozzles of 4.6 mm in dia. Entrained condensate droplets and coarse dust particles are removed by preliminary spraying with cold washing medium, followed by cooling with the same medium in a venturi scrubber. A swirl plate separator with a drop separator removes the washing medium from the gas. This greatly improves the efficiency of the process. The new design combines the execution of a greater number of process steps with a simplification of the whole operation.
