A joy stick type of lever for an electric switch control the automatic speed change of motor cars includes a square link plate (30) on the control lever (10). A spiral spring (12) which returns the lever automatically to the central (neutral) position rests against the ends of the longitudinal webs (21) which defines four paths for the plastic cap (16) of the lever in a cross pattern. Four contact springs (only two shown, 17, 29) can be deflected by the lever cap to make contact with a common contact plate (15). Each spring end is guided in its own recess (23, 26). This combines simplicity with a minimum of space requirement.
