The block has a pulley box and a hook cross-member. The hook tilts about the horizontal axis of the cross-member, and slews about its vertical axis under the action of an electric motor driving it via a slip coupling. The drive shaft and the hook shank (14, 9) are so coupled together as to allow the hook to be tilted on the horizontal axis of the cross-member after the coupling has been disconnected. The coupling (16) can be made removable without the necessity to remove cross-member or hook first, and its two halves (17, 18) can be slide axially in relation to each other, it being of the elastic dog-clutch type.
