Low-density concrete contains expanded closed-cell plastics beads, e.g. of polystyrene, PVC, polymethacrylate ester, etc., with dia. over 8 (pref. 10-15) mm. The spaces between them are occupied by a mixt. of cement and and mineral fillers, pref. absorptive blown silicates, e.g. pimice, blown clay or perlite, of graded sieve size, pref. 0/4 to 0/8 mm, in amount more than that required to fill the pore spaces between beads in contact. Higher compressive strength than known low-density concretes contg. smaller plastics beads, together with relatively constant thermal insulation valves, are achieved. Cost is reduced by use of expanded plastics beads in place of blown silicates.
