Plastics extruder has the inner wall of the cylinder in the feeding section provided with grooves which on the downstream side are followed by radially inwardly directed guide members. Grooves which can be helical or axially extending can be formed by vanes adjustable radially in the cylinder housing and the guide members are formed by spigots which are spaced at distances corresp. to the pitch of the vanes. Members which may form two annular arrays may be heated. Used as single worm feed screw extruders processing polyamides and polyesters. Extruders are not only adapted for processing the polyamides and polyesters but do so at increased rates.
