Friction block for brakes and couplings is formed from at least three firmly interconnected layers, of which at least one central sheet is made of vibration absorption material. The two other sheets are of a friction lining material. The block is cylindrical, and the vibration absorption layer has a larger dia. than the two other layers. The absorption layer can be made of asbestos fibre, or temp. resistant fibre, having a textile or felt-like structure. During the commencement of each load process, the friction block is slightly subjected to torsion, but a permanent rotation of the block in its guide is prevented by the central damping layer holding firmly against the face surface of the lining carrier hole.
