Process for extending the lifetime of moulded catalyst supports contg. Al oxide in heterogeneous gas phase catalysis with static or fluidised bed catalyst at 120-500, pref. 200-400 degrees C involved adding 0.01-15, pref. 0.05-8 wt.% steam, wrt the sum of the reactants, to the reactants before these enter the reaction zone. The steam and reactants pref. are mixed homogeneously before entering the reaction zone and kept under conditions above the dew point. Typical processes include (de)hydrohalogenation, (oxy)halogenation and halogen exchange reactions of (un)satd. (halo)hydrocarbons and aromatics, ester interchange of low-mol. alkyl esters, esterification of low-mol. alkanols and alkenols with hydrohalic acids, catalytic copyrolysis of (per)halohydrocarbons with low-mol. alkanols, (de)hydrogenation of organic cpds. with(out) functional gps. and large scale organic oxidn. reactions.
