The static converter, for eg driving a bidirectional motor, has the number of rectifying units reduced without affecting the 3-phase supply. This reduction is achieved by using rectifying units previously used for one direction only for both directions of load current flow. These bidirectional rectifying units (M1, M2) are connected to special rectifier bridges (F1, P4 and N1, N4) depending on the direction of load current flow. These special rectifiers are connected by their dc side to the rectifying units and by their ac side to the load - ie they lie between the load and the rectifying units.
