Reduction of harmful substances and/or metallic cpds. in aq. soln by adding reducing agents to decontaminate the water and/or to recover the metals comprises the following. An electrically conducting catalyst is added which is simultaneously appropriate for the electrochemical reduction of the substance to reduce and for the electrochemical oxidn. of the reducing agent. Applications include treating water contg. chromate, nitrite, or cpds of Cu, Ag, Au, Hg, or Pt. The process is simple and economic. The reaction is almost quantitative giving non-toxic products. It is applicable to low concns. esp. of metal cpds.
