A heat pump (17) in combination with an air solar energy collector (2) has its evaporator (9) located in a duct (8) to which air heated by the solar collector (2) can be fed. The air is drawn past the evaporator (9) by a fan (10) driven by a motor (11) and is recirculated along duct 33 past the collector (2). The evaporator (9) can be excluded from the circuit by valve (6) directing the heated air along bypass duct (13). Heat storage devices (4) can thus be charged by being fed the heated air either along bypass duct (14) or through the solar collector (2). Fresh air can be fed to the duct (8) to prevent the evaporator reaching too high a temperature by opening throttle valve (16). The heat derived from the air circuit by the heat pump (17) can either be fed direct to a heat delivery system (29) for space or water heating or it can be stored, until wanted, in a heat storage device (25).
