The molecules have wide absorption and fluorescence bands, are in solution and are tested in liquid, solid or vaporous states in a wide temp. range. The molecules are excited in two or more steps at accurately defined instants, using light sources of sufficient intensity in the IR, visible and UV spectral range. The frequency of at least one of the light sources is variable, and the filling of the end level is measured. The spectral response is determined from the superimposition of two frequencies.
