Diesel-electric propulsion system for vehicle - has flywheel connected to traction motor by belt and driving manual gearbox

The diesel electric transmission has a simple belt drive (5) between the electric traction motor (2) and the flywheel (4) as well as accelerator and clutch pedal controls. A gearbox (9) with a gear lever completes the drive unit. The engine and generator unit (1) run at the economic speed, with the engine torque controlled by a control loop from the accelerator pedal. The vehicle electrics are powered from a small battery which is charged by an impeller driven generator situated in an air scoop on the vehicle. The system provides optimum economy with minimum exhaust emission, as well as enabling a relatively small engine to drive the vehicle.
