The rotary grill split is driven round in uniform stages. A driving wheel (21) which has teeth (23) on the outside is mounted on the spit (2) or on the drive shaft (12) which can be connected up to be driven with the spit. A weighted looped cable retractable spring or other draw device is provided to engage on the driving wheel either directly or by means of an intermediate member e.g. a cable drum (13) whilst a double pawl (25) with pendulum (27) attached interacts with the gearing (23) of the wheel (21) and to this end is suspended for swivel movement above the wheel (21). The double pawl operates in conjunction with the pendulum wherein the driving wheel can only be rotated one cog with each to and fro movement. The rotary speed and torque acting on the spit can be determined according to the size of the wheel, the length of the pendulum, the spacing of the pendulum wt. from its swivel axis and according to the radius of the calbe drum and the weight.
