The ship with insulated cargo holds is structurally entirely conventional. The sandwich type insulation is in the form of interlocking prefabricated panels which are assembled to enclose a vertical-sided hexahedral space regardless of the adjoining hull contour. Floor-side and overhead-panel strengths differ, being determined by the expected cargo-derived loading. Internal reinforcing members are of low thermal conductivity material. The choice of facing material is based on the expected operating conditions, that on the outside must anyway prevent moisture penetration/water leakage into the insulating material.
