Phenylamino propanol prodn. from alpha:oximino propiophenone - by two=stage catalytic hydrogenation over platinum and then palladium

Prodn. of 1-phenyl-2-aminopropanol (I) by catalytic hydrogenation of alpha-omixinopropiophenone (II) in acids is carried out in 2 stages, (II) being hydrogenated first to alpha-aminopropiophenone (III) in the presence of Pt and then to (I) in the presence of Pd as catalyst. Prior problems of rapid deactivation of the catalyst is avoided. (I) is obtd. in pure form and in good and reproducible yields and little catalyst is needed.
