Desizing textiles with bacterial alpha-amylase - at room temp. under mildly alkaline conditions

Method for removing size from textiles comprises treatment with a bacterial gamma-amylase (I) at room temp (pref. 20-25 degrees C) under mildly alkaline conditions (pref. pH8-10). Desizing agent contg. bacterial (I) is also claimed. Desizing is carried out under mild temp and pH conditions and the time required can be cut by half. Where the size inlcudes polyvinylalcohol or carboxymethylcellulose as well as starch, the size layer is simultaneously swollen which facilitates rinsing out.
