The combustion engine comprises a fuel injector (7) which injects fuel in a pre-combustion chamber (5) connected to the main combustion chamber (4) via a duct (9, 11). The fuel jet (12) impinges on a baffle face arranged within the chamber (5). The impact area of this face does not exceed the cross-sectional area of the jet. A passage is provided around the race for any fuel that rebounds or runs down, which passage leads into a duct (17) directed towards the main chamber (4) and is screened (15) from the remainder of the chamber (5). The face may be the upper truncated face of a double-conical member (13) with downwardly pointing apex.
