A reaction prod. of a Phytolacca acetone isolation prod. with alkali contains a 3,4-dihydroxy cinnamaldehyde dimer of formula (I) as the main component. (I) has antihepatotoxic properties which are greater than those of the isolation product from which it was derived (cf. DT 2840453) by treatment with alkali.
