Trichlorophloroglucinol ethers of formula (I), their prepn., and their conversion to trichlorophloroglucinol (II) are claimed: (where R is propyl or isopropyl). Cpds. (I) are prepd. by reacting hexachlorobenzene (III) with 3-20 (pref. 5-6) moles of NaOR at 50-250 degrees C (pref. 100-200 degrees C) in an aprotic solvent, e.g. pyridine or DMF. Cpds. (I) can be converted to (II) by hydrolysis with a mineral acid, pref. with HCl or with HCl contg. HOAc or Ac2O. (I) can be prepd. in high yields (80%) from (III) (a highly toxic by-product of propylene chlorination) and can be converted in high yields (96%) to (II), which is useful for the prodn. of antioxidants and flame retardants.
