A measuring and display method for fuel consumption provides the driver with directly useful information on the rate of consumption. The actual fuel consumption of the vehicle is differentiated from an ideal consumption versus vehicle speed function. The difference is displayed. The ideal consumption characteristic is also a function of the gear ratio selected. Consumption, distance and time are measured for the evaluation of consumption and speed in an electronic unit. A further evaluation unit derives the difference between the actual and ideal consumption rates.
