Somatic-hybrids between tomato and potato - prepd. by fusing protoplasts with equal number of chromosomes

Reproducible method for growing somatic hybrids of potatoes and tomatoes comprises fusing protoplasts isolated from tissues of the two species. Both types of protoplasts must have the same number of chromosomes and culture of the fusion prod. is carried out in 8p-culture liq. (KaO and Michayluk, Planta(Berlin) 126(1975)105) without riboflavin. Protoplasts are esp. dihaploid; esp. for potato from line HH258 and for tomato from Lycopercon lyopersicum var. cerasiforme (Duval) Alef "mutant yellow green 6". Viable hybrids are obtd. from two plants which have never been hybridised sexually.
