The system has a segment transmitter generating signals in accordance with the crankshaft position, processed in a switching unit controlling the ignition coil. The switching unit (2) has a microprocessor with a store for the position of the ignition instant, depending on the input signals. It determined the instants of the ignition coil (3, 4) switching on and off by comparison of the transmitter signals with the stored values, so that the ignition coil (3, 4) is sufficiently charged before the switching off. The coil is switched off in accordance with stored ignition advance curve by a combination of the transmitter signal evaluation methods.
