Synthetic tow coiling head - forming coils around a series of parallel conveyor belts with grooved surfaces

A coiling device for synthetic filament tows, in which the tow is coiled around a series of short, freely movable belts lying parallel with the coiling axis. Concentric with the coiling head is a star wheel, whose axis is inclined with respect to the coiling axis, having projecting arms between each pair of conveyors which are longer than the coiling radius of the row. The star wheel is prevented from rotating with the coiling head, so that the arms execute a reciprocating motion parallel to the axis, advancing the coils of tow along the conveyors, which rotate freely in their bearings to prevent relative motion between the tow and the belts. There is no positive drive to the parts of the coiler which contact the tow, thus no danger of soiling or damaging the tow. The device can be used with tow speeds in excess of 4000 m/min.
