The contact seal works between stationary and rotary components, to prevent the passage of liquid, gas, and solid particles contained in it. An annular groove (1) coaxial to the axis of rotation (A) is of roughly triangular cross-section, and accommodates a spring-loaded triangular-section sealing body (2) of approximately the same cross-section, with its apex in the axial direction. Of the mating surfaces of groove and body, one is of hard and the other of soft metal. A coaxial annular cylindrical groove filled with grease is formed in each of the flanks of the first groove (1) and if necessary also at its base, so as to form wider inner and narrower outer flank sections. The inner sections are at the same angle as the faces on the body, while the outer ones includes a smaller angle, their inner edges being in line with the inner sections and their outer ones standing proud of them. Thus the outer flank sections each form a running-in surface.
