A tape cassette unit is used as the basis of a door chime or musical chime system with full facility for controlling the duration and volume. The door bell button (2) is coupled to a timer unit (4) that controls the transport unit (6) of a tape player (8). The pick-up (10) and the amplifier (12) complete the unit. The actuation of the door bell button causes a pulse to be generated after a predetermined interval to engage the tape drive. The signals from the tape, which may be either a chime sequence or musical tune, are played at a selected volume. The replay process continues for a period determined by the timer (4). At the end of the period the tune ceases and the tape returned to the start position. A new cycle may be initiated by operating the door bell button again.
